JOB DESCRIPTION
This position as Head of the Neurophysiology Group will report to the
Therapy Area Head. Will be responsible for a multi-disciplinary team
of 6 graduate and doctoral staff members who provide the Neurobiology
Business Unit's primary expertise in in vitro and in vivo
electrophysiology, neurochemistry and ion channel analysis. Will be
responsible for maintaining and developing cutting edge
neurophysiology technologies and skills sets, providing technical
support to both the CNS and Genitourinary therapy areas (including
Herg assay support) and initiating research activities targeting
psychiatric indications. Will contribute to the day-to-day scientific
and strategic management of CNS activities within Neurobiology. Will
also play a central role in coordinating the group activities with
those of similar functions elsewhere in the organization and
providing critical peer review of scientific activities in global CNS
research.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. in Neuroscience and 7-10 years relevant experience. Industrial
experience in CNS drug discovery, especially in relation to
psychiatric disorders. Specific skills in application of
electrophysiology techniques to the study of voltage and ligand gated
ion channels in vitro and in vivo, use of voltage- and ion-sensitive
dyes to evaluate ion channel activity. Experience in methods enabling
in vitro and in vivo measurement of neurotransmitters and
neuroanatomy. Preferred knowledge and skills in pharmacology, high
throughput electrophysiology methods, use of isolated intact tissue
preparations (e.g. purkinje fibres, vagus nerve for
electrophysiology, and broad understanding of molecular approaches to
novel drug target identification, especially as it applies to CNS
targets.
