Dear Prof. Aguzzi,
As I see it, a mailing list is an idea solution for distributing the information concerning congresses and meetings, and I see no difficulties in using the CLIN_NEURPHYSIOL list for this purpose. The simplest way to do this is that you join the list accor
ding to the information below (which is a copy of a recent promotion message for the list). By then posting to the list you will automatically get access to all people presently listed. Further information may later be sent in several ways; to the list ag
ain, through a special "meeting list" which you set up at a local computer and to which interested colleagues can subscribe, or by setting up a separate WWW-page at a local computer.
Unfortunately, there is no way to keep a systematic record of the professional status and the ordinary mail addresses to the subscribers, as this information is not regularly provided in the subscription messages. Thus, sending a list by which info could
be bistributed would only provide you with incomplete addresses, and would also give you the trouble of setting up and maintaining the distribution. It seems to me as the ideal solution would be to send a message to the list, and in the message also ask t
he recipients to redistribute the info to other possibly interested colleagues.
You may also use other sources for posting, such as MedWeb, at <http://www.gen.emory.edu/MEDWEB/keyword/Neurology.html>

The CLIN_NEUROPHYSIOL electronic discussion list have now been unofficially operating for more than six months. As list manager I've experienced very little technical trouble. Subscription requests have at large been directed to the proper LISTSERV@LISTSE
RV.UMU.SE-address, and only few return address errors have occurred. Sadly, it has not been possible get mail through to a few early subscribers from mainland China; probably because that part of the net has been quietly disconnected from the rest of the
Internet...
The existence of the list have also been announced by fax-message to the secretary of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN), Prof. Giuseppe Caruso in Napoli. To inform about the list further, I hope that all of you already susbcr
ibing can spread the word to colleagues, as well as to national and local chapters of any appropriate associations.
By announcing the list to different societies I also hope that more general messages will be posted to the list, e.g. about meetings and courses. As far as I see it, also commercial announcements and offers about equipment and hard-/software directly rela
ted to the field of clinical neurophysiology may be posted. (But keep them short and adequate - preferably give an Internet or WWW address to contact for those with further interest in the products!)
Below you will find a text suitable for sending as information about the list. Please use it if you feel like informing, but don't have much time for writing!

Welcome to join "CLIN_NEUROPHYSIOL"- the new discussion group via Internet!
Beginning by January 1:st 1996, an electronic mailing list "CLIN_NEUROPHYSIOL" was opened on the Internet, as a discussion forum for all professionals working within neurophysiology in general and clinical neurophysiology in particular! The list is run
by the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the Clinical Neurosciences Center, Umeå University, Sweden. You are most welcome to subscribe to this list, free of charge! We hope that it will become a useful tool for rapid communication of news and ide
as, and that it will favour many interesting discussions. However, to this end it is of great importance that knowledge about the list is widespread. We therefore ask you to please pass this information on to your colleagues and co-workers!
This unedited list is run as a simple remailer, with messages going out just as quickly as the mailer can handle it. This ensures good turnaround, and keeps the discussions flowing. It is maintained semiautomatically; i.e. subscriptions, additions and del
etions to the list are made by the individual users themselves, while some general support and supervision is maintained by us.
SUBSCRIPTION
Subscribing to the list is simple, and only requires a connection to the Internet and an e-mail address. To order the subscription, send the following command in an email-message to "listserv@listserv.umu.se":
subscribe clin_neurophysiol
Please note that the message should have no header and thus that the text should be in the BODY of your e-mail message. After that the message is received by the list server, you will have to confirm your instruction according to the instructions sent as
a reply by the server.
POSTING A MESSAGE FOR DISCUSSION
Sending messages to the list/group is done through your ordinary mail-program. Send the message as an ordinary e-mail to clin_neurophysiol@listserv.umu.se, and it will be added and redistributed to all subscribers.
RECIEVING MESSAGES FROM THE LIST/GROUP
After subscribing, all messages sent to the list will be redistributed to you as ordinary e-mail. To reply to a message, use the 'reply' function of your mail program, or post it as a new message.
If you have questions or comments about the 'CLIN_NEUROPHYSIOL' list, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you!
